If you’ve started a business from home, chances are, you started on your own, or with just a little casual help. You might have spent time learning about things like marketing and accounting to give you the skills that you need to run a business, or even to turn your blog into a business on your own while stretching and developing your skills in other areas. As a new business, this can work well. Not recruiting staff can save you a lot of money, and it gives you a chance to gain a full understanding of all areas of your business. Even if you are creating and selling products, while business is slow, you can cope on your own.

Then, one day you might find that your business starts to snowball. Suddenly, you can’t cope with the demands on your own. You can’t produce enough products, and your skills in some areas aren’t advanced enough to give your business what it needs to grow.

When this happens, you need to recruit staff if you want to maintain consistency and growth. You can no longer go it alone. You need some help. But, while business is good, you could find yourself in the tricky position of needing extra hands and minds, but not being able to afford to take on a full team or recruit openly.  Fortunately, there are some great options for hiring on a budget. Let’s take a look at some of the best.

Learn How to Keep Your Staff

One of the problems that many small businesses have with recruitment is keeping hold of their staff. They find that they are always looking to replace team members as they move on to bigger and better things. Over time, this can mean that your team is never at its best and that you are spending much more than you need to on recruitment and training. Take the time to set up a Reward & Recognition scheme, make sure you respect and value your staff and offer them flexibility where you can, and they’ll be more likely to stick around — saving you time and money moving forward.

Work with Freelancers

Freelancers can be an excellent option if you need help, but can’t afford permanent staff. They give you some flexibility, as you only have to pay them when you need them, so if business slows, you won’t be spending money on people power.

Freelancers can help with web design and management, digital marketing, social media management, photography, administration and even answering your phones. Whatever you need, they’ll be a freelancer that can help.

Offer Work Experience

It would be fantastic to fill our teams with highly qualified graduates at the top of their game. But, most of us can’t afford those kinds of staffing costs. Offering work experience to local students can be an excellent option. So can setting up an apprentice scheme. Young, inexperienced staff might seem like a risk, but they are usually keen to learn and free from bad habits. You’ll get to teach them how to do things your way, and they’ll be eager to learn as much as possible about your business.
