People are always looking for ways to make money and generate more income. Little do they realise, the answer might be right in front of their eyes every day. Our homes are filled with possessions, collections and sometimes junk that we’ve accumulated throughout our lives. It all piles up to clutter our living space and give us less room to relax and enjoy home.

But there’s a solution – decluttering, and it might just make you a bit of cash if you know what you’re doing. Below we’ll discuss why decluttering may be a great option for you and how you can financially benefit from it.

Why declutter?

You may be asking: what’s the point of decluttering? Well, there are a few strong points that argue in its favour. First of all, decluttering can help to provide you with a more comfortable and healthy living space. Research suggests that people with tidier and less cluttered homes have lower cortisol levels which directly impacts the level of stress people face. So, cleansing your home can actually be a handy way to cleanse your mind too.

Of course, there are other reasons why decluttering can be good for you, including creating a more productive and inspiring space for you to work or play in. A decluttered home is also one that you may feel more proud to show off, which may be holding you back from inviting guests over.

But there’s one potential benefit that interests many more people, and that’s the financial element of decluttering. If you can come to terms with getting rid of possessions that you don’t need or want anymore then you can certainly make money from more valuable items. Granted, some ‘things’ in your home will be worthless, but you could find some real gems that you can sell too.

What items can I sell?

Whatever you have in your home can be sold if you can find the right buyer. Furniture, clothes, technology, accessories, jewellery, art, DVDs, vinyls – the list is quite possibly endless. Pick one room in your home and comb through your belongings, scrutinising every item and considering its worth to you and perhaps to someone else.

If you don’t know how much something is worth, do some research online and you’ll quickly get a good idea. Remember, you don’t have to only sell items to declutter – get rid of things that you can and can’t sell. The things you won’t be able to sell can be donated or responsibly disposed of.

Where can I sell items?

With the wonders of modern technology, you can pretty much sell your items within a matter of hours and all from the comfort of your own home. But there are a variety of ways you can utilise to sell your goods depending on your preferences.

For any valuable items like fine jewellery or watches then you could consider getting a quote from a pawnbroker. If you’re flogging clothing then you may want to explore the services offered by online platforms such as Vinted or Depop. Other online platforms like eBay, Gumtree or FaceBook Marketplace are also popular avenues to use for a wide range of items – but beware of scammers.

If you prefer to sell in person then you can always set up a stall at a local car boot sale or take some antiques down to a local dealer. The possibilities are endless if you take the time to source the right buyer.
