If you haven’t already ventured into the world of audiobooks- now is a great time to start. Audiobooks are so convenient to listen to when you are out walking, doing chores, commuting, or even just enjoying a relaxing night in. Audiobooks have come a long way since the audio tapes of the 90s, with experienced storytellers adding drama and suspense to any book. Audiobooks are now readily available to listen to via your phone or iPad, with many paid subscription services and apps on the market to choose from. Audible is one of the most well-known audiobook services, but at £7.99 per month, it is one of the more expensive subscriptions out there. Today I’m going to tell you about a few cheaper alternatives to Audible that you could use to save yourself some money.
Scribd
Scribd is essentially a digital library where you can download unlimited e-books, audiobooks and even newspapers and magazines. Scribd offer a free 30 day trial, and if you want to continue your subscription it will set you back £8.99 per month. There is every book category imaginable available on audiobook- from Science, to classic books, to Food and Wine. Scribd’s mission is to change the way the world reads, and to keep reading alive in the 21st century. There’s something wonderful about that mission!
Local Library
Check out your local library to see what offerings they have when it comes to literature, you may be surprised to see some recent bestsellers on the shelves. Libraries all over the country are struggling at the moment, with many libraries being forced to close over the last few years. Libraries are a valuable part of any community and by using them we can show our support. It costs nothing to get a library card and start borrowing books and audiobooks (as long as you return them within the given time frame). It’s worth seeing if your local library is signed up to any apps such as Libby or Overdrive which allow you to borrow audiobooks directly from the library and listen to them on your smartphone or tablet.
Haggle with Audible
Like many companies, Audible is open to making you an offer to stick with their service. If you tell Audible you want to cancel your subscription, they will give you a 3 month subscription for £3.99 which saves you just under £20 when compared to what you would usually pay for 3 months of usage. Audible also offer your first audiobook for free, so if you are new to the world of audiobooks, this might be the best way to try them out before committing to a monthly membership.
Amazon Prime- Audible Channels
If you are an Amazon Prime member, you will receive complimentary access to 50 audiobooks which are on rotation through Audible Channels. These are exclusive audiobooks which are available to Amazon Prime members only. They act as a taster of what you could be reading with a full Audible subscription, but if you’re an Amazon Prime member anyway, you may as well make use of this free add-on rather than going all out and paying for the full Audible subscription every month. If you’ve never trialled Amazon Prime before, you can get a 30 day free trial (just remember to cancel it!)
