I recently found of the sad news that online selling app Mecari will be closing in the UK in early 2019. If you're a member of Mercari read on to find out what you'll need to do going forward.

What is Mercari?

Mercari is described as “a hassle-free and secure way to buy and sell items straight from your mobile device or tablet.” In other words, Mercari is a mobile app which allows people to buy and sell goods online right from their phones. It's the same concept as other online selling sites such as eBay or Gumtree.

I have been using Mercari for ages now, and really loved this app for both buying and selling.

When Mercari are Closing

Mercari have posted this on their website:

“As of 18th December 2018 we’re announcing that we’re closing down the Mercari service in the UK from early next year. Unfortunately, as we’ve not grown as quickly as we’d hoped, we’ve made the difficult decision to end the service in the UK. Mercari will continue to be available in Japan and the United States. We'll be closing down the Mercari service in the UK from early next year. The last day for buying and selling will be 15 January 2019.”

Our closing down timeline

  • From 15 January 2019
We’ll be ending all buying and selling, and restricting access to most features.
Please take copies of any information you need for your records from within the app before this date.
You will still be able to complete outstanding transactions, request a withdrawal, and get support from our team.”

Is your money at risk?

Mercari has stated:

“First things first, if you have a balance in your Mercari account, your money is safe. By 15 March 2019, please make sure you’ve withdrawn your balance, as all functionality in the app will no longer work.”

How do you get your money out?

To get your money out, you'll simply withdraw in the standard way once both you and your buyer have rated each other. However, please make sure this is done by March 15th, 2019. As previously stated, all functionality in the app will no longer work from that date onwards.

How to get support when the app is no longer available

“After the app stops working in March, please email us at uk-contact@mercari.com if you need to do any of the following:

  • Withdraw any remaining Mercari balance
  • Obtain a record of any previous transactions
  • Get answers to any other questions you may have”

I'm very disappointed to see that Mercari will be going from the UK as it has been a fantastic money earner and bargain finder for me whilst I've been using it. You may have some more questions on how to deal with your account going forward. If you do, I would recommend sending an email to the address mentioned above and Mercari will be able to help you out!
