If you are a homeowner for a number of years, then you have probably started to think about your windows. Although it is not something to consider too often, there are times when it must be inspected and attended to. Air leaks, water infiltration, thermal leaks and fogged glass are just a few reasons why homeowners may consider replacement windows.

Replacement windows

Replacement windows may seem like the best solution for your window problems however, they may not be. Replacement windows replace the glass and the moving parts of a window but not the frame. In most cases, the areas around the window are the most damaged. Window sills are often impacted the most from moisture yet are never replaced during the window replacement process. If the area around the glass is badly damaged, then you may want to consider building up that area again.

Consider repairing rather than fixing

Many homeowners experience increased energy costs and go ahead with replacing their windows. However, this is not always necessary as windows can be repaired depending on the extent of the damages. You should read more on repairing windows and vinyl windows depending on which one you have, before you decide to replace them. You can do the replacement or repairing on your own which will save you money.

Wood windows

Homeowners who want to maintain a classic or vintage look in their home often prefer using wood materials. Timber wood adds a beautiful look to any home and can last a lifetime if they are properly maintained. They need regular care in order to maintain the way that they look and their durability. Wood windows are indeed subject to many different weather conditions, therefore the more regular checks done on the windows, the better. This will save you lots of time and money in the future. Prevention is priority in ensuring that there is no major damage in the future.

Possible problems

While cleaning your windows you may want to do an inspection. Possible problems may include:

  1. Water penetration – This may be caused by cracks in the windows finish that have occurred due to lack of maintenance. If water is consistently in close proximity of the wood window frame this will eventually cause damage.
  2. Rotting wood – This is one of the worst things to happen. It is caused by water entering the timber or because the wood is old and incorrectly taken care off. If you do find rot, it needs to be removed before it spreads.
  3. Wood window hardware – Ensure that all the hardware and all the mobile parts of the window are working. You should ideally lubricate the mobile parts at least twice a year with acid free oil.
  4. Sash windows – Check that the ropes are not fraying and replace as needed.

Damaged windows can cost lots of money to fix or to repair. Therefore, homeowners are urged to check their windows regularly, which will avoid greater damage later on. This will save you a great deal of money.
