These days, there’s enough DIY options available for your living room which in all honestly really don’t need to cost a lot of money at all; with some savvy scrummaging and a creative brain, you’re sure to be able to build a festive feeling within the home on a minimal budget.

Use Cards as Decorations

Each year, we’re all battling with an influx of greetings cards adorned with well wishes and glad tidings, and there’s no doubt that most of us only ever take a quick glance before placing them aside. Most greetings cards are adorned with fantastic designs varying in colours, styles and sizes and because of this they can often make fantastic decorations. By ensuring that your cards are on display within the home, you’re much more likely to have a festive feeling within your space, without having to spend a penny! Consider hanging string or tinsel to clip your cards to for the ultimate festive décor.

Forage Foliage

Foliage is not only relatively cost effective (especially if you have a flourishing garden!) but it also particularly trendy as Christmas decorations this year. Wreaths and garlands are both particularly easy to make yourself; head to the great outdoors and collect a selection of sprigs and twigs, holly, ivy, pinecones and anything else you can get your hands on in order to create your very own door adorning piece. There are a whole load of do it yourself guides out there when it comes to making your own wreath, so you don’t be stuck for inspiration.

Add a Festive Scent

Nothing screams Christmas quite like the fresh and spicy scents of pine, cinnamon and mulled wine. Whilst the high street is full of high-end, luxury candles that do of course smell delicious, they also cost a small fortune. There’s a common misconception that expensive candles are the only candles that are able to fill a room with scent, with many believing that those on the cheaper scale won’t be smelt at all. Yet several of the UK’s biggest supermarket chains are managing to create ranges of candles that not only smell great, but they’re great for your pocket too. There’s a great guide which outlines the very best budget candles which I’d advise taking a look over, after all, the smell of Christmas needs to be in the air!

Utilise the Simple Things

Sometimes creating a festive feeling doesn’t have to mean the glitz and glamour of physical decorations, you simply have to build an atmosphere that inspires. By investing in a quality set of blackout curtains from Terrys Fabrics, you’re able to shut out the rest of the world and by simply lighting a couple of basic candles and grabbing a mug of hot chocolate, you’ve got yourself the ultimate festive film-watching setting.

Get Crafty in the Kitchen

It’s easy to sometimes forget the traditions surrounding Christmas and the things many of us did as children, that we may not have done for many years. For many people, getting creative in the kitchen was one of the only ways to add some festive cheer to the home and it’s still very much a fantastic activity! Consider baking your own edible gingerbread or cookie creations, not only can these be utilised as decoration around the home, they will fill your living space with that all important delicious festive scent!
