Lots of us love settling down on the sofa at the end of a busy day and watching something on the TV. Shows can bring us to tears, make us laugh, distract us from the trials and tribulations of life. Half an hour or 60 minutes can pass in what feels like a click of the fingers if the show grabs your attention. Many of the must-see shows often sit behind a pay wall though. You have to subscribe to something in order to watch them. In this post we're going to look at how to save money on TV without subscription.

Watch Free To Air TV

One of the first things you could do is cancel all your TV subscriptions. This can eat a huge chunk of our monthly pay cheque and whilst we all love sitting in front of the latest Netflix box set, it can be expensive. There are lots of free to air TV shows available, that lots of people are talking about. You can watch Married At First Sight Australia on E4, Trigger Point on ITV1 and The Teacher on Channel 5. Of course, if you are watching live TV you will need a TV licence at the moment, even with all the talk of scrapping it. This costs £159 a year for a colour one. However, there is a loophole. If you don't want live TV or anything on the BBC, including iPlayer, you don't need a licence. You can watch the likes of Coronation Street on the ITVHub, Hannibal on My5 and The Great British Bake Off on 4OD, as long as they are just streamed catch up shows. If it's films you are after, there are plenty available on these platforms too and they change week in week out. At the time of writing this you can watch Bohemian Rhapsody on 4OD. It's a kind of magic!

Free Trials

There are lots of streaming sites which will let you have a free trial before you decide if you want to commit to pay. These trials vary from a few days to a month or two. This can be a great way of watching some TV without subscription. You could catch up on some TV shows that everyone at work has been talking about. You could watch a full series in a couple of nights, so you can join in those conversations on your lunch break. Just be sure to make a note of when to cancel by so you don't get charged for that first month.

Monthly Passes

If you don't want the financial commitment of long subscriptions, did you know that you can buy monthly passes with different TV companies? A monthly pass will give you a whole thirty days to enjoy some great entertainment. This can be wonderful if you are at home for longer during the winter months but the rest of the year you are out and about, not watching TV. NOW (formerly Now TV) offer monthly passes for Sky Cinema where you could watch Peter Rabbit 2, Minions and the Harry Potter collection. You could also get the Entertainment pass which will allow you to watch Chicago Fire, Euphoria and the reimagining of the Will Smith breakout show, Bel Air. The Entertainment pass also gives you access to kids channels. For those looking for reality TV, a hayu pass is perfect whilst sports fans will love a monthly pass for Sky Sports. BT Sport also offer a monthly pass, so you can watch a whole host of domestic and international sport for a fixed monthly price, with no ties. Monthly passes are a great way of enjoying TV without subscription. Some of these monthly passes roll over into the next month if you don't cancel them. So be sure to sign up and then cancel, so don't forget and won't be charged for the next month.
