Winter is undeniably a fun time, with Christmas, New Years, snowball fights and sledding down hills, there’s plenty of fun to be had. But you know what isn’t very fun? Your heating bill doubling as you need to have your heating on more often and your electricity bill shooting up as you need your lights on throughout the day.
Having your bills go up as well as the other expenses of the season like buying Christmas presents and winter coats, can put a sour note on an otherwise enjoyable season.
Luckily though, there are some things you can do to cut down on your heating and electricity bills – So that you can enjoy the snow without having to worry about whether or not you can pay your bills. Read on to find out some tips to keep your bills down this winter.
Insulate Your Home
As you’ll need your heating on more often during the winter, an uninsulated home can lead to you losing that valuable heat and ultimately wasting money as your home loses heat.
While insulating your home may be expensive if you choose to fully insulate your walls and attic, there are cheaper ways of insulating your home to cut down on heat loss.
There are two main areas where heat loss occurs: your windows & your doors.
You can effectively insulate your home’s windows by upgrading your windows to double glazed windows or by getting thick curtains to help keep heat in your home.
As for your doors, with normal doors you can simply place down a draft excluder by your door to stop cold air leaking into your home and stop hot air leaking out – However if you have a glass patio door it’s recommended to install door blinds like these from DotcomBlinds to help stop heat leaking.
All of this will keep your home warmer, meaning you don’t need to use your heating as often to keep warm!

Swap To Energy Efficient Lights
As the days get shorter and darker, you’ll find yourself having to use your home’s lights more frequently to keep your home light.
Unfortunately there’s no real way to avoid using your lights at home, other than just using a torch but that’s wildly impractical and will likely lead to you taking a few falls.
But you can reduce the amount of energy your lighting uses, by switching from old filament lightbulbs to energy efficient or LED lightbulbs you can reduce the amount of electricity used lighting your home.
Studies show that energy efficient and LED lightbulbs use 90% less electricity than filament lightbulbs, meaning that by making this swap you will be cutting your electricity bill down by quite a bit!
Bleed Your Radiators
As you’ll be using your radiators often for heating, it’s important to keep them in top condition as radiators can get air bubbles trapped in them which can massively reduce their energy efficiency.
To get rid of these air bubbles, all you need to do is bleed your radiator at the start of winter. This is done by using a radiator key and draining the water from the radiator, this will remove any of those pesky air bubbles.
Once you’ve bled the radiator, it should fill back up when used and you’ll notice that your radiator will now be warmer and more consistent with it’s heating ability, which will save you money as the radiator is more efficient.
