As we move from Winter into Spring, all of our wallets take a collective sigh, the Winter heating bill is out of the way and now the weather is warming up we don’t need to have radiators on all day. But if you live somewhere warm, you are likely also dreading your Summer utilities bills as you will have your Air Conditioning or a fan on all day.

But there are ways you can keep cool in the heat without needing to run up your electricity bills paying for Air Conditioning to run all day. Avoiding this increase in Electricity use can help you cut quite a bit off your Summertime bills and while it may not seem like saving a lot the first year you follow these tips, in a few years’ time you will have saved quite a big chunk of money by keeping costs down.

So, you are probably wondering what you can do to avoid forking out for a big AC bill this Summer, well never worry we’ve got you covered with some easy and actionable tips to keep your home cooler this Summer without breaking out the Air Conditioning.

Tip 1 – Avoid Adding Heat To Your Home

Starting off, we have a pretty simple change to make in your home, when it’s warm out and you want to keep cool, don’t add extra heat to your home. One of the biggest heat makers in our homes is the Oven, but in the Summer ask yourself do you really need a hot meal? It’s hot enough as it is, so by opting for uncooked meals like salads can help you keep cool at home by not having the oven running.

Obviously the Oven isn’t the only generator of unwanted heat in your home, but it’s probably the most common, other ways to avoid adding unnecessary heat to your home in the Summer time include: taking cold showers, rather than warm showers; opening windows before you hoover to let heat out; not using the dryer feature on your washing machine and cutting down on making hot drinks like tea and coffee.

Tip 2 – Cool Yourself Down

There are plenty of ways to cool yourself down when it’s warm that don’t involve plugging in an Air Conditioning unit. For starters there’s the advice your Dad always gave you when you wanted the AC on ‘Just take a layer off’, if you’re getting warm, think about dressing down a bit, sometimes you’re only too warm because you’re wearing a hoodie in July!

Beyond just taking off socks and a jumper, there are other ways to keep cool, having a quick cold shower and then air drying will help your body cool down and get you to a comfortable heat, or if you don’t have time for a shower, running cold water over your wrists and feet can help cool your body quickly.

Tip 3 – Keep The Sun Out

On to our final tip for keeping cool this Summer, simply keep the Sun out of your home, if the Suns rays can’t get into your home it will be a lot cooler. You can easily do this by simply closing all your window blinds and curtains in your home (Bonus points if they have a solar reflective backing). This will keep your home cooler as heat cant enter your have as easily.

It is important to note, even with blinds or curtains closed, keep your windows open if you can, keeping windows open will let in fresh air and cool breezes, which will make it even easier to cool down your home.
