Having your own car offers a unique freedom: you can travel wherever you like, whenever you like, giving you the chance to see more of the world and become more efficient in your daily tasks.

This freedom comes at a significant cost, however. In 2018 the average cost of running a car in the UK was £162 a month, or a little under £2000 a year. This is a large chunk out of anyone’s budget, but there are ways to reduce the cost of running your vehicle. Here are some of my top tips on how you can enjoy the freedom of your own car without shelling out a lot of cash for its upkeep.

Find A Fuel-Efficient Model

Fuel is a big part of any driver’s budget, so try to save money on this by selecting a fuel-efficient car. Look at the miles to the gallon on each model of vehicle you’re interested in and select the one that will go the furthest on the least fuel. This will allow you to travel where you want to go and save money at the same time.

Lease Your Car

Buying your own car is expensive, and you often have to make do with a poor-quality model, so consider leasing a car instead of buying one. You can find a range of different leasing options for some of the most fashionable, popular models on the market currently, such as these cheap Evoque leasing deals from Vantage Leasing meaning you can drive a great car without the high price tag. You’ll also save money on running costs if you choose to lease a car, so you can reduce your costs across the board and still enjoy the benefits of a new, cutting-edge car.

Consider Black Box Insurance

High-risk drivers, such as those who are under the age of 25 or have driving convictions, face hefty bills when they go to insure their cars. To combat this, consider using black box insurance to reduce your costs. Black box technology is installed in your vehicle and used to monitor your driving. If you adhere to your insurer’s conditions, which often include driving at certain times, and are within the law at all times, then you’ll pay less for your policy.

Learn Basic Maintenance Skills

Taking your car to the garage is expensive, and whilst for some damage or mechanical problems it can be worth it, you can do some basic car maintenance, like changing the oil and replacing your car battery, yourself. This will save you money and also give you the chance to learn some important life skills.

Car Share To Save Money

If you go to the same place regularly, or are taking a long journey, consider car sharing to save yourself money and get yourself some company for your trip. Ask for some money to cover your expenses so that you reduce the cost of your journey. Having some company in the car will be good fun as well, leaving you to enjoy a sociable trip at a reduced cost.
