My ultimate guide to saving money on Yankee Candles

I absolutely love candles, and I will admit to being a bit of a candle snob. Yankee Candles are my absolute favourite candles, however, they can be quite expensive. I have never paid full price for a Yankee Candle and I'd never buy a fake Yankee candle. So here is my ultimate guide to saving money on Yankee Candles, whether it is buying bargains or extending the lifespan of your Yankee Candles.

 

As you may already know, there are many different types and various sizes of Yankee Candles, which means the prices can vary also. From tea lights, to large jars with 150 hours burn time- there are so many to choose from. Let’s take a look at the current prices of the ‘Classic’ range on the Yankee Candle website…

Wax Melts – wax melts are sold individually, and are priced at £1.79, and have a burn time of up to 8 hours.

Tea Lights – tea lights are priced at £6.99 for a box of 12, the burn time is 4-6 hours for each tea light.

Votive Candles – votive candles are also sold individually, priced at £1.99, and have a burn time of up to 15 hours.

Small Jar – small jars are again sold individually, and are priced on the website for £8.99, they have a burn time of 25-40 hours.

Medium Jar – medium jars are priced at £19.99, and last for 65-90 hours.

Large Jar – large jars are priced at £23.99 and last for 110-150 hours.

The cost can add up, but nobody wants to end up with a fake Yankee candle that's sub par, so how can you get the real deal for less?

1 Shop outlet stores and sales

As you can see, the prices above are on the expensive side, so some of the best places to look for Yankee Candles at reduced prices are by shopping the outlets and shopping the sales. Outlets include places such as TKMaxx, and outlet villages such as Clarks Village which has a dedicated Yankee Candle outlet store. Yankee Candle also have their own sales fairly often on scents that they are ‘retiring’ and scents that are out of season. For example, at the time of writing the Christmas and winter candles are currently reduced- this is the perfect time to buy them at a discounted price before December comes along! Don’t forget that Yankee Candles are also stocked at many stores such as Clinton Cards, Boots and Argos- not to mention local independent stores too. It’s worth also checking out these places when they have sales on to see what you might be able to pick up.

There are also American outlets such as Ross where discounted Yankee Candles can often be found, if you’re not planning a trip to the US anytime soon, don’t worry, they have a website. Amazon also often run deals on Yankee Candles, and the Large Jars can be reduced by around £4 frequently. One way to treat yourself to a Yankee Candle without the extra expense, is to earn free Amazon gift cards on apps such as Shoppix where you can exchange tokens for Amazon vouchers. 

2 Trim your candle wicks

Did you know that there are a few things you can do to extend the lifespan of your Yankee Candles, as well as increasing the scent pay off from them?

One of the best things you can do is to trim your candle wicks to 1/8 inches and keep it trimmed every 4 hours. You can buy a special Yankee Candle wick trimmer, but you can also use nail clippers to get the job done without forking out for an expensive wick trimmer.

Keeping your candle wick trimmed helps to control the amount of wax that is present, creating the ideal complete combustion where carbon particles are absorbed by the flame. This also means that there is less soot.

3 Don't burn candles for more than 4 hours

Your candles should not be burned for more than 4 hours at a time, and I know that I am guilty of not always following this rule. Ideally, you should burn them for a maximum of 4 hours, and then let them cool for at least 2 hours before relighting them. The reason for this is that carbon will begin to accumulate on the wick and it will start to form a ‘mushroom’ shape, this unsteadies the wick and can cause soot to be given off which is what can blacken the inside of a Yankee Candle jar.

4 Sell your empty jars on eBay

Did you know that empty Yankee Candle jars sell on eBay? Once you have a few, simply clean them out and pop them on eBay to make some extra money. You might even make enough money to treat yourself to some new candles! Who knew there was profit to be made from something that would have otherwise ended up in the recycling?

Here are some examples of empty jars that have been sold on eBay, which will give you an idea of how much you could make from selling your own. People will also pay more for jars with labels of scents which are rare or discontinued, so it’s worth looking at your own jars and having a quick google to see if they are particularly sought after.

5 Beware of fakes

Since Yankee Candles have become so popular, there are now unfortunately some fakes on the market. You can tell if a Yankee Candle is authentic by looking at the lid to see whether ‘Yankee Candle’ is cast in the glass, and also check the bottom of the jar to ensure the label also has the Yankee Candle warning along with safety instructions. You can also use your own common sense, Yankee Candles have authorised retailers who stock and sell their product, if you see them being sold on at half price on a market stall, it is probably too good to be true.

6 Get a wax burner

A Yankee candle wax burner is a great way to make that great Yankee Candle scent last for longer. Just place a wax melt on the top of the wax burner, and heat from underneath with an unscented tea light. As the wax melt warms up, the aroma will be released into the air. If you know your candles well, you could even use a scented tea light candle to heat up the wax melt to create your own hybrid scent.
