Earlier this month, I headed to London for a baking masterclass arranged by London and Country, who wanted to promote their #PieceOfCake campaign – where sorting your mortgage is a piece of cake. The idea was to work in teams to build a cake in the shape of a house, with a cash prize up for grabs for the winners.

My competitive streak came out, and I plotted with Charlotte from Lotty Earns, who I attended the event with. The plan was simple – bake a cake, win the competition and have extra spending money for Disney World.

Upon arrival at Cookery School at Little Portland Street, we were offered some gorgeous warm scones, perfect for a mid-morning treat. After our safety talk we were paired up – my plan for cake domination with Charlotte was ruined. I was teamed up with Jacinta from Jacintaz Three, and after quick introductions we were ready to roll.

We decided to create a Hansel and Gretel house, and once we had decided this we kept coming up with more and more ideas. I love baking, however I haven’t ever created a cake in the shape of anything fancy, never mind a house! My skill set includes making the best butter icing ever without needing to weigh ingredients, and piping. Jacinta was great at this, and soon the ideas were flowing.

There was a real air of competition during the event, with lots of hushed voices and scribbles in notebooks.

As you can tell from the Very Srs look on my face, the competition was on!

Did I mention that we also had a time limit? A mere three hours to bake our cakes, let them cool and get them decorated. Plus there were points awarded to those who got their cakes in first.

Finally, after all the blood, sweat and tears (okay, so there was no blood or tears, but it was very warm in there!) our masterpiece was complete! A Hansel and Gretel inspired cake, complete with a fence, grass, a golden path and even though you can’t quite see it, a magical pond.

There was some stiff competition, and whilst we didn’t win, I had a great time. It was great to meet Jacinta and the other bloggers, not to mention the fun that I had baking and decorating.
