KDP HUB

Lesson 2:

Realistic Start-Up Costs

One of the best things about Amazon KDP is that it’s completely free to get started. You don’t need to pay to open an account, you don’t need to buy stock, and you don’t have to pay for printing or postage. You simply upload your book, Amazon prints it on demand, and you earn money each time a copy sells.

When it comes to creating your book, there are lots of free tools available.

If you’re writing a book that’s mainly text — such as a novel, a guide, or a journal with no illustrations — you can use Google Docs completely free of charge. If you already have Microsoft Word, you can use that too, but there’s no need to buy it specially.

If you’re creating something that needs design work, such as a planner, workbook or anything with a cover or interior layout, Canva is a brilliant free tool. I personally use the Canva Pro version because I rely on it for so many areas of my business, but you absolutely don’t need it when you’re starting out. The free version will do everything you need for your first few books.

For your book interiors and covers, I also recommend Creative Fabrica. They offer a free trial where you can download 10 items completely free, which could include ready-made interiors, cover templates, clipart, or design elements. Later in this hub you’ll find tutorials on how to use Creative Fabrica to put your books together — including how to mix and match different downloads to make something unique.

That’s why I say you can easily make two to five books completely free when you start. Out of those 10 free downloads, a few might not be right for you, but some will be perfect to merge into your first few books. After the free trial, Creative Fabrica’s paid plan works out at just £3.99 a month (if you pay annually). I’ve more than earned that back many times over through the books I’ve published using their resources — but for now, we’re focusing on getting started at no cost.

You might also want to use AI tools to help with the process. This is a personal choice, but I’ve found them really helpful for brainstorming layouts, titles, keywords, and descriptions. I use the paid version of ChatGPT for my projects as well as Sintra (which has 12 different ‘helpers’) , but you can absolutely get by with the free version when you’re just starting out.

So to sum it up — getting started with KDP can be completely free. All you need is a bit of time, creativity, and curiosity to try it for yourself.
