Energy bills can easily rack up, especially over the colder winter months. Fortunately, if you’re intentional with your energy usage you can actually save a lot of money each year on your bills. In today’s post, I’ll be sharing a few tips on how you can stay on top of your energy usage to save bills.

Turn off lights / Unplug unused devices

These are incredibly simple but effective ways to save money on your energy bills. Building a habit of turning off your lights when you leave the room can save you up to £15 a year! Unplugging your devices when they’re not in use and not leaving your electronics on standby will save the pennies too.

Monitor your energy usage

Keeping tabs on how much energy you’re using each day can be very helpful in reducing the cost of your bills. There are a number of ways you can monitor your energy such as installing power meters to track the amounts. This will allow control how much and how often you’re using your heating. Many energy providers now provide smart meters that can be displayed in your home that allow monitoring, some are even integrated with apps on your phone!

Set timers

Take advantage of your electronics that have timing settings and make sure devices will shut down after a period of no usage. A lot of devices do this automatically, but you can apply this concept to your heating and lights too. Being mindful of how long devices are kept on and off will pay off over time. The best part about this is once these timers are set up, you don’t have to think about them again!

Replace your lightbulbs

Swapping your standard lightbulbs for LED bulbs will be a far more energy efficient option longterm. You will get a significant saving on the cost of running each bulb using this method. LED bulbs are also far better for the environment too! This small change will have a dramatic change on your costs of lighting your home over the year.

Replace heating with blankets / hot water bottles

It can very tempting to turn the heating up during the colder months however, I often find that curling up with a thick warm blanket and a hot water bottle can be all I need. Every time you opt for your blanket instead of reaching for that heating dial, think of the money you’ll be saving!
