When you turn 13, you some extra independence. The idea of becoming a teenager is something many kids strive for and when they hit those digits they want to start branching out that little bit more. When we turn this age, many new teenagers start considering how they can make their own money. This could be to pay for a mobile phone contract, fund trips into town or add some new items to their wardrobe. With that in mind, let’s look at some ideas of how to make money when you’re 13.
Babysitting
Looking after other people’s kids is a great way to earn some money. If you have family friends or neighbours with younger children, you could offer babysitting services. A lot of the time it’s sitting in the living room whilst the parents pop out for a meal or to a meeting. The children are often in bed already so it’s just being there should they wake up. You need to be responsible and honest. do a good job and you’ll likely get word of mouth recommendations. One of the great things about babysitting is that you can often use that time to get your homework done. Knowing you’re getting paid for that time. This means you are earning money, whilst getting your homework done, freeing up other time in your week for fun!
Pet Sitting

It could be the case of popping around to a neighbours house every day whilst they are on holiday and feeding the cat. It might mean having an extra rabbit living at your house for a fortnight. Dogs will need more looking after as they’ll need walking, however you can probably charge more money for that.

Yard Work
There are probably lots of people in your immediate neighbourhood who could do with a bit of help with their gardens. Older people especially, need their yards tending to and they don’t always have the ability to do it themselves. You could be mowing lawns, pulling weeds, trimming hedges or raking leaves. You could charge per hour or per job, depending on how much time you think it will take. You could get regular clients who you work for every other weekend which will bring in some decent money. Look after your client and they’ll look after you. Usually bringing you a cold glass of lemonade and possibly a biscuit or two!
Washing Cars
No one likes have a filthy car and paying teenagers £5 to clean a vehicle is something many adults will do. Some clean water, car shampoo and a sponge is all yo need. However you could use a pressure washer or brush attachment on a hose should you have access to one. Get rid of all that grub and grim from the wheels and windows and earn some good money. You might be able to get some regular clients in your local area and wash four o five cars in a morning. Giving you some cash to go spend with your friends that evening.
Waiting Tables
Next on our list of how to make money when you’re 13 is waiting tables. Lots of cafes and coffee shops will hire younger staff on weekends to help wait tables and make drinks. If there is a café in your local area, pop in and see if they have any vacancies for weekend workers. You might even get a discount on some of the cakes!
Newspaper Delivery
Newspaper delivery is still around, although not quite as popular as it once was. There are newsagents who will pay you to deliver papers to their customers. There isn’t a lot of cash in it for you though, especially if you have to pedal a bike for a few miles after school. You might look at other methods of delivery. There are communities where a free paper is delivered every week or fortnight. These need someone to push them through letterboxes. You might get 200 -500 papers to deliver, maybe for £30 or £40. Then there are local takeaways and businesses who rely on leaflet drops. Again, they need someone to dot hat for them and if you could connect with a couple of businesses, you could do them at the same time. Giving you twice the amount of cash, for one walk around the estate.

If you’re handy with a video camera and have knowledge or opinion to share, why not become a content creator. Some of the big names you know from YouTube started in the same position as you. You might not get Instafamous, but you could earn money from the adverts on your videos.
Use Your Tech
If you do have a new mobile phone you need money to pay for, use it. You can sign up for survey sites like Swagbucks to make some extra cash in your spare time. You could even use the knowledge that you have of operating modern day tech, by teaching older people who have no idea. So many elderly people want to be connected to loved ones and friends online but don’t know how to start. You could show them how to start up a video chat, order groceries online or stream the latest shows. Could tech lessons for the elderly be a great way of how to make money when you’re 13?
You need to double check the current government rules about working as a teenager. These include that children cannot work before 7am or after 7pm and a maximum of 2 hours on school days and Sundays. If you are employed you can do a maximum of 5 hours on Saturdays. It is also limited to 25 hours a week during school holidays. If you are working for yourself though, you can figure out what works for you. Remember, this is your childhood. There are plenty of years down the road when you will need to work long hours. Find a good balance between earning your own cash but also having time to enjoy your youth.
