When was the last time you had a proper deep clean of your home? Many of us have things shoved in corners, on shelves and in the back of wardrobes that we no longer want. You might think it is worthless, but it is likely worth something. That's why you bought it in the first place and held onto it for so long. If it has value, sell it and use the money to help pay your bills or treat yourself. Let's have a look at how to get paid for your unwanted stuff.
Organise you things
Firstly, you need to organise your things. Grab a box (or the washing basket!) and wander through the rooms in your home, piling in what you no longer want. It could be clothing that no longer fits, toys that your children have outgrown or household items that you don't use anymore. Even broken items have value! Put them in your box and then you can start working out how much money you want for each individual item.
Photograph & list
The next step is to photograph your items. You could do this as individual items or if there are certain items that are similar, you could create bundles. This is a great idea for children's toys or clothing in the same size or from the same brand. Laying clothing items flat and taking photographs from above is great, however, if you can hang them up, model them yourself or use a mannequin that is even better. Most photos have decent enough cameras to take good photos. Be sure to take shots of any damage so that when you mention it on the listing, the potential buyers know what you are referring to. Now you just need to list the items so they can sell. Where are the best places to sell?
Posting Supplies We Recommend![]() 100 pink mailing bags - these are PERFECT for posting clothes and I always get compliments on the gorgeous colour of the mailing bags.
Thank you stickers add a bit of fun and colour to my packages, and I love this multicoloured set. They go really lovely with the pink mailing bags and are an utter bargain.
If you are posting out things like cosmetics or books that might need a bit more padding, save money by stocking up on jiffy bags. So much cheaper than you will pay at the Post Office.
Not all Cellotape is created equally, and this is the best stuff I have ever used. Yes, I like Poundland prices, but sometimes it just doesn't cut it. |
Free sites are your friend
To get paid for your unwanted stuff, you need to get them in front of potential buyers. There are a few fee-free sites where you can list easily, customers collected and pay in cash. Try Facebook marketplace or Gumtree. This is a great way of selling if you have heavier items as you don't have postage to figure out. Buyers then come to your house and buy the items. Clearing out with minimum effort whilst getting maximum cash! For niche items or to get branded clothing in front of more people, you can look at the likes of eBay. With so many users, searching for things you are selling, it is a great way to get more for your items. You need to be aware of fees though.
Keep an eye on postage costs
If you are sending items through the post, you need to be sure you are charging the right amount on your listing. If you underestimate or don't weigh your item and check for the amount, you risk eating into your profits with postage. Sending stuff through the post is quite expensive so even though apps like Depop and Vinted are great, if you can get local buyers without paying any fees, you remove the need for postage altogether.
Spend a few minutes this evening looking at things you no longer use. This is potential money in your pocket. All you have to do is sell it and get paid for your unwanted stuff.
