Rapinoe, like Morgan, is on the cusp of winning the Golden Boot. Both are joined by the next player in the list, England’s Ellen White.
Ellen White
England’s Ellen White netted her fifth goal in the country’s 3-0 win over Norway tying her with Morgan and Rapinoe as the tournament’s top scorers. All three women could potentially win the Golden Boot.
White has had a good tournament so far, and her manager believes she is the best forward in the competition.
Lieke Martens
Although the focus is on the potential Golden Boot Winners, Dutch wing wizard Lieke Martens may steal the crown. She has netted three times for the Netherlands so far and must be relishing the chance to work her magic against the Swedes.
She was named Fifa’s player of the year in 2017, and it is clear she has the passion and the heart to do great things in the game.
The Netherlands men’s team has arguably suffered from too much egalitarianism to perform at their potential and play as a team. If the women’s team can keep playing the way they are and with players as athletic as Martens, they must be feeling quietly confident at winning the whole thing.
The tournament so far has been engaging and a success. Given the television coverage, it can’t fail to make an impact on the wider sport and do wonders for women’s sport in particular.
